I love this! Thanks for chiming in!

Personally, I dye my caucasian hair -all sorts of colors- so I can't pretend I'm 100% natural. All people of all time have messed with their hair... that's ok. But when oppressed cultures adopt too many of the dominant culture's style, heritage and identity can be lost (e.g. the monstrous shoulder pads in the female suits of the 1980's. *shudder*). ;)

Heritage and history are to be worn with pride, shared, and appreciated. Nappy or straight, thick or bald, it's our job to educate each other. Thanks for educating us with your beautiful perspective!

Unfortunately, it's ideas like this that cause African Americans to continue on the path of self hatred. The term "nappy-headed" means exactly that, nappy headed. It describes hair that is thick, curly and healthy. It does not mean that someone is "poor, dirty, uneducated, unwashed person". The bottom line is that anyone who uses the term in that manner is down right ignorant. How is it that AFRICAN Americans, who descended from AFRICA can be so hateful, un-loving and unwilling to accept themselves as they were created in the beginning of time. This unfortunatrly causes white people to have the same ideas. Every single black person, whether they are mixed with another race or not has the physical charachteristics of African people. The main one is nappy hair...and get this, its ok! You can run from it as long as you want to, but you cant hide. Those relaxers, straigtening combs, flat irons, blow dryers...they work temporarily, but what happens after that? The return of your very own beautiful natural hair! (Despite all the years of torture and damage you've put your hair through) We are beautiful people and are not defined by how straight our hair is. Leave that to the people that were meant to be that way. To those who call me "nappy headed" I say, Thank you. I love who I am and wouldnt change it for the world.
