I think it's intrinsic to being human. If you give someone item one of three and two of three, they will feel an urge to get item three of three. What makes them act on it depends on how hard it is to get and some people will factor in what they plan to do with the completed set. We also like to categorize things into smaller subsets. All the baseball cards for people who have hit home runs, all the dolls that can bend at the waist, all the spices that are good in cookies. They don't understand why they collect and the internal need to collect overrides the reality about their financial situation which leaves them in ruin. That financial disaster also leaves them not able to collect anymore so they feel shame, fear and panic on two levels.
